Run-Shunga

It all started when I got a new pair of workout shoes. Being the frugal person that I am, I usually go for the cheapies, but decided that because of how much walking I do with Edgar and exercising daily, that I should go for the good ones. Some hundred odd dollars later, I was convinced I was going to get my money out of them!

That's when I started the Couch to 5k training schedule, a two month beginner's program.

For those of you who know me, I DON'T run. I always end up injuring myself.

So when I checked out the concept behind the Couch to 5k, I felt I had a shot at it. They start you slow and build up your bone strength and muscles to prevent injury.

So far it has worked out really well and it allowed me to run my first 5k ever, this morning! Run-Shunga in Council Grove, Kansas.

This was the tent to pick up your timing chip and finish line.

I had some time to kill before the race started, so I took a walk along the river.

Then I headed over to the park where we started the run.

The hubster was supposed to run with me, but had to work, so I was on my own.
Things started off pretty well.

I ran my first mile in 9 minutes and 08 seconds.

Then came the hills, crippling my speed to a measly 12 minute mile.

My last leg of the race was mostly down hill, but void of any shade. Hot, hot, hot! I wanted to die, but used getting out of the sun as motivation.

I'm not sure how I pulled it off, but I fininshed at 30 minutes and 06 seconds. A personal best.

I also placed third in my age division of 19 to 29. Totally unexpected!
Half of the fun of this event was the 45 minute drive down to Council Grove. It is a gorgeous route!

On my way down it was nothing but blue skies and green hills!

On the way back though, a storm was a brewin'

At this point, it got pretty windy and I had to put the camera down to focus on keeping the car on the road. I made it home safely, but only to find the power was out.

The perfect time for a nap!

I hope to go back soon and check out the historic downtown area they have in Council Grove, filled with neat little shops and to continue my walk along the river.

Thanks for reading about my day! See you again soon.

  1. Wow am I proud of you, you really did a great job for your first race. It is really a shame that Rich had to work. You are looking very good!! Council looks to be lovely place to spend an afternoon, we will hit that one for sure next year. The walk along the river looks so very inviting. I love your photo's as usuall, but it makes me miss you sooo much.
